Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a popular game these days. You could just argue that first Tag Tournament was somewhat little more than graphically improved version of the Tekken 3 with bolstered roster and functional tag system but even when just played today it is clear that the Namco struck near perfect balance between the visual finesse, the button-tapping accessibility and also the mechanical sophistication. Anyone with faintest interest in just gaming could spectate the play or even spend hours in training room with the chosen pair of the characters. What is strange is that it is taken Namco well over decade to return to one of greatest sideshows in the fighting game history.
There is also an optional 3D mode for those who have taken plunge although game still looks somewhat fantastic without it. I am just pleased to report that the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has also been worth wait as from opening sequence that hits nostalgic erogenous zones in all right places to weighted meaning of word tag the Katsuhiro Harada and his team have also crafted high-quality package that should entice dabblers back while just offering added depth for zaibatsu diehards. The only thing that is missing is genuinely the new characters but with over around 50 familiar faces to just mix and match lack of the new blood is not just too jarring.
You can also pair Baek with the Hwoarang for ultimate taekwondo tag team and the Eddy with the Christie for shin-hacking dreamor if you would prefer something little less conventional then you can opt for oddball pairing like dainty Xiaoyu with towering Marduk, or kangaroo boxing skills of the Roger Jr. with stern demeanour of the Dragunov. The Namco has built upon arcade template with number of the console exclusive characters, including breakdancing Tiger and metallic Prototype Jack and even though the Doctor B is not on guest list you can pair the Marshall and the Forest together for first time in the Iron Fist history.
They are not only lazy texture swaps as Marshall keeps move set from the Tekken 6 while the Forest's play-style is just more akin to earlier games. As intriguing as just returning characters are they would be redundant if tag system was limited to only passing baton rather than just building combos in the tandem. So thank devil and angel that the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is flexible in combo creation department as it is on the select screen because even if you can just launch, somewhat juggle and also bound with best of them then you now have to factor in the Assaults and the Crashes as well.
Switching characters after launcher will initiate Tag Combo opportunity that will also target opponent's red health by hitting dedicated tag button you can also switch between chosen fighters on fly to go distance in closely fought match and you need to be somewhat mindful of Rage system that powers up off character after your just point man takes certain number of the hits. You have to pay attention to red health that just slowly recharges when the reserve fighter is not in use. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a game equally enjoyed by all age groups.
